“Opportunities and challenges of statistics on Social and Solidarity Economy”

04 Nov 2019

An expert workshop on “Opportunities and Challenges of Statistics on the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE)” was held at the European Economic and Social Committee, Brussels, on 4th November 2019. The workshop was organized jointly by UN Inter-Agency Task Force on Social and Solidarity Economy, United Nations Research Institute for Social Development, International Cooperative Alliance, CIRIEC International, Social Economy Europe and the European Economic and Social Committee. During the one day workshop, around 30 experts shared international, regional and national experiences and discussed how statistics on SSE could be developed. The main debate was around issues related to different conceptual frameworks on SSE statistics as well as an ongoing European project on the satellite account on SSE. Based on the results of the workshop, a strategic meeting was organized on 5th November at the ICA Global office in order to discuss follow-up activities on the issue.

The ICA has been deeply engaged in the development of statistics on cooperatives which resulted in the ILO Guidelines Concerning Statistics of Cooperatives adopted by the 20th International Conference of Labour Statisticians, 2018. It is also playing a key role in promoting statistics on the SSE in line with statistics on cooperatives. The ICA was one of organizers of the workshop together with other partners and Sonja Novkovic (Chair of Committee on Cooperative Research, through online), Hyungsik Eum (Strategy and statistics coordinator) and Santosh Kumar (Legislation coordinator) participated in the workshop together with colleagues from Cooperatives Europe and ICA Member Cooperative António Sérgio para a Economia Social (CASES) from Portugal.
