Cooperative housing: a key model for sustainable housing in Europe

The conference will discuss and present what are housing coops and how they can answer future challenges.
Cooperative housing represents an important part of the housing market in many countries in Europe. For instance, housing cooperatives manage over 3.5 million dwellings in Poland (about 27% of the total housing stock in the country in 2009), about 17% of the total housing stock in the Czech Republic and Sweden, 15% in Norway.

Conference: Cooperatives working towards a fair and competitive food supply chain

Cogeca, representing European agricultural cooperatives, and Euro Coop, the European Community of Consumer Cooperatives, will host a conference on 24 April exploring how cooperatives build a fairer and more competitive food supply chain.

The event will feature speakers from the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Economic and Social Committee. Representatives from agri-cooperatives and consumer cooperatives will share experience-based best practices for creating a better food supply chain.

The contribution of cooperatives to the sustainable development of local economic circuit – premises, possibilities, outlook

Due to their democratic organisation and their economic orientation, cooperatives contribute significantly to social integration, job creation and the reduction of poverty. Cooperatives are thus stabilising regional economic cycles and can generate regional employment. The United Nations general assembly declared 2012 as the international year of cooperatives and thus acknowledges their worldwide impact on economic and social development.

Co-operative contributions to the EU 2020 strategy

At European level the International Year will reach its climax with the Co-operative Week, which will be held in Brussels from 23 to 27 April 2012. The European Conference ‘The Co-operative Business Model: a Key Development Tool for the EU 2020 Strategy’ will officially open the week.
