Kenyan Co-operative Bank increases education scholarships to almost 2,800 students

The Co-operative Bank of Kenya has increased its secondary school scholarships for bright but financially disadvantaged children from all over the country to almost 2,800 students over the next 4 years, from the previous 1,400 students.

Co-operatives are key to achieving Rwanda’s 2020 Vision

The Rwandan government is committed to growing the co-operative sector across the country, as a means to achieve sustainable development. At a meeting with officials form Lesotho, Minister of Trade and Industry, François Kanimba highlighted the important contribution of co-operatives to achieving the government’s vision for 2020.

Launched in 2000 by Rwandan president Paul Kagame, Vision 2020 is a development programme designed to help the country achieve middle-income status by 2020 and to accelerate annual GDP growth to 10% over the period 2013-2018.

Co-operatives champion innovation around sustainable business

The thinktank SustainAbility has named co-operatives as one of the 20 business models that promote sustainability-related business model innovation. In its report “Model Bahavior” the thinktank ranks the co-operative model as the second most innovative business model in the context of sustainability.

The report explains that co-operatives change the incentive system within a company to make members, whether employees or customers, more likely to feel invested in the company and its brands.

Japanese consumer co-operatives set out priorities for 2014

Over 260 representatives from Japanese consumer co-operatives met in Tokyo to discuss the business plan and policy development for 2014.  Every year directors and chief executives from consumer co-operatives across Japan gather to set out their objectives for the coming year.

The meeting, which took place on 15 January, was jointly organised by the Japanese Consumers’ Cooperative Union (JCCU) and the Japan Co-OP Insurance Consumers’ Co-operative Federation.

New Farm Bill could help strengthen agricultural co-ops in the US

The US Congress passed a Farm Bill that could create a more favourable environment for agricultural co-operatives. The Bill, which sets out US’ farm policy for the next five years, was passed by both the US Senate (by a 68-32 vote) and the House of Representatives (251-166).

The National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA) welcomed the passage of the Bill, which is likely to increase co-ordination between US Department of Agriculture (USDA), federal agencies and national and local co-operative organisations.

Positive commercial performance for Brazilian co-operatives

Brazillian co-operatives reported a strong year in 2013, collectively achieving a trade balance of USD $5.6bn. A report by the Ministry of Development, Industry and External Trade confirmed that co-operatives also increased exports from 1.7% in 2007 to 2.5% in 2013.

‘Strasbourg declaration’ calls on governments to realise the potential of social enterprises and co-operatives

Over 2,000 policy makers and social entrepreneurs from across the European Union’s 28 member states highlighted the importance of co-operatives at a high-level conference in Strasbourg.

The two-day event was organised by the European Commission and encouraged social entrepreneurs to “have their say” by joining the discussion on the role of social enterprises in the European economy.

Cecop launches an interactive itinerary to promote co-operative cultural heritage

The European confederation of co-operatives and worker-owned enterprises active in industry and services (Cecop) is designing an innovative itinerary in the field of cultural and industrial tourism that will promote and preserve the co-operative heritage.

Cooproute will include co-operatives that are deeply rooted in the local territory and whose economic activities contribute to preserving the traditional local skills and products.
